Customer Request 📝

Our customer needed industrial GSM-based cold chain warehouse monitoring panel: a panel to track temperature, humidity and door status across a multi-zone cold warehouse. On site, tracking still relied on shift notes, manual thermometer checks or cloud panels that go silent when Wi-Fi drops. In industrial or rural locations, a quiet panel means quiet risk.

The expected solution was clear: SMS status without always-on internet; temperature–humidity and door thresholds; immediate alerts on critical deviation. In short: “when the warehouse is closed, the cold chain must not become a blind spot.”

  • Late temperature drift: If a compressor fails or a door stays open, stock enters the danger zone for hours; issues are often noticed only at the morning count.
  • Door and shift discipline: During loading the door is left open; temperature and humidity rise together with no log.
  • Remote blind spot: The site is far from town. When Wi-Fi drops, the panel goes quiet; after a night power cut nobody knows what happened.
  • Simple operation: Operators should get status by SMS from their own phone—no extra app.
  • Industrial hardware: Not a hobby kit; a panel-mounted PCB that tolerates condensation and electrical noise.

In short, the request was: “Measure temperature, humidity and door locally; SMS on threshold breach; reply to STATUS with a live summary.”

Our Solution 💡

Revan Technology approached the need through field reliability. We put GSM (SMS) at the centre instead of Wi-Fi: wide coverage, the operator’s phone is enough, no mandatory app.

The control board sits at the centre: sensors measure continuously, thresholds are evaluated locally, and SMS is sent on drift or door violation. A STATUS message returns live temperature, humidity, door state and the latest alarm summary.

  • Local decisions: Measurement and thresholds stay on the board; cloud outages do not kill the function.
  • SMS scenarios: Critical temperature, long door-open, supply interruption and status query.
  • Zone thresholds: Per-room / shelf setpoints for multi-zone stores (e.g. +2…+4 °C food, −18 °C frozen).
  • HMI: Backlit LCD for thresholds, mode and recent alarms without a PC.
  • Manufacturable PCB: Conformal coating, filtered inputs, industrial terminals and IP-rated panel mounting.

The goal was not a flashy dashboard, but a durable panel that reduces outage and product-loss risk on site.

Cold-chain monitoring panel architecture

Hardware and PCB

The board was designed for cold-room condensation and compressor-related electrical noise: coated PCB, filtered sensor/door inputs, isolation from noisy lines, industrial terminals and IP-rated enclosure mounting. An optional backup / outage sense input can trigger SMS when mains power fails.

Temperature–humidity, door and thresholds

Industrial temperature and relative-humidity sensors plus magnetic/mechanical door contacts are used. A door-open timer tolerates short loading cycles and alarms when the open time exceeds the limit. Temperature hysteresis prevents SMS/output chatter around the threshold.

Interface, GSM and operation

The microcontroller decides locally; the GSM module carries alarms and queries by SMS. From the LCD menu, operators set zone thresholds, choose manual/auto monitoring and review recent alarms. A temporary mute window can cover maintenance/loading; monitoring resumes automatically afterwards.


Results

After commissioning, the panel moved cold-chain tracking from “shift luck” to a measurable process.

  • Early warning: Temperature drift and long door-open events reach the phone within minutes; product-loss risk drops.
  • Link independence: Even if Wi-Fi or cloud fails, GSM still delivers status and alarms.
  • Operational discipline: Door violations become visible; shift habits improve.
  • Energy and maintenance: Abnormal compressor stress and recurring faults are noticed earlier.
  • Scalability: The same architecture expands zone by zone to additional rooms.
