Mobile App vs Web Panel

Mobile app vs web panel is not a “which is modern?” debate. Field operators work standing with a device in hand; the office wants alarms and reports in a browser.

The PCB stays the same; the face changes. The wrong face makes even a good board hard to use.

Mobile app vs web panel: short definition

Mobile: phone/tablet app over BLE/Wi-Fi on the floor. Web panel: browser for office/maintenance and multi-device summaries. They are channels by user—not rivals.

Problem context

Mobile-only and managers cannot see the line. Panel-only and operators feel stuck at the machine. Separate teams building each face break the protocol. Mobile app vs web panel is really a protocol discussion.

Technical analysis

  • Link: mobile often local wireless; panel LAN/WAN.
  • Roles: panel sessions; mobile quick approve.
  • Alarms: panel queue + history; mobile instant alert.
  • Updates: OTA on the board; UI needs its own version discipline.

Field scenarios

One machine commissioning → mobile may be enough. Dozens of units + shift reports → panel is required. Both → one shared command set. See multi-device field monitoring web panel PCB.

Solution approaches

Protocol and data model first, faces second. At Revan, PCB + mobile and/or panel stay in one team. For general panel ideas see dashboard).

Gains

Right channel, fewer integration surprises, less office–field conflict. Maintenance stops asking “which app do I install?”

Industry note

“Ship the app, add the panel later” gets expensive if the protocol was never shared.

Results

Mobile app vs web panel is complementarity, not competition. Choose by user; unify on the PCB protocol.
